Wellbeing, Empathy And Altruism Brief, Planning, Research

The project’s premise is tackling the way I and everyone less in the class personally view diversity of the 21st century, creating 2-4 final images by the deadline 27th of march. What I wish to achieve by the time final work is due for marking is to *denim straight* that a tolerant understanding world still and will always exist through making my pictures promote human quality’s such as respect, equality, empathy and wellbeing for one another which show from kind actions and behaviours people share.

I shall use 3-D aspects in at least 2 of my photos for this project, objects put in the frame to deliver a stronger massage overall by how they interact with the theme of images for instance i’ll be using a piece of paper held by a model with one word written on it. Historically stereotypes have changed immensely from how they started to what they’d be considered as today for a couple examples, Japanese people and Mexicans have both been portrayed as a lazy dating back to the early 20th century when now they are mentioned as hard labor workers or devoted mathematicians. German’s were defined as dumb and emotional due to visits from famous authors and comedians who say and get quoted by there personal believes, the British through Irish looked like apes because the comedian Francesca Ramsey said “has nothing to do with how someone looks and has everything to do with dehumanising them.” So the way stereotypes form is because one opinion of someone with power or fame directed towards a group can cause mass amount of people to take it in agreement as they own opinions.

The Equality act

This was formed by parliament and became law in 2010 it legally protects people from discrimination in a workplace also in wider society, the equality act has replace previous anti-discrimination laws with one single act making the law easier to understand. The act states 9 different groups that needs protecting from bias views or unfair treatment. they are age (18+), sexuality, religion, race, gender, disability, marriage, pregnancy, gender orientation these are know as Protected Characteristics. The main reason to why this law is an important necessary contribution to living more happily and peace free is because it has replaced older legislations such as race relations act 1976 and the disability discrimination act 1995 but its main use and what it was made for was ensuring that consistency remains between employers and employees need to do met to create a fair environment for the workplace and comply with the law.

Ideas & plans

  1. I like the thought of mixing groups which aren’t usually seen together for an example a skate park full of skaters happily interacting with an elderly couple not disturbing the peace of the youth in anyway and destroying the separation of ageism for elderly which is created due jealousy from the side of elderly or snobbery from the youth momentarily lacking respect. The young person Ill use as the main model for this idea (Mark) will be teaching the elderly how to skateboard and it dose not have to be skating i’ll be experimenting with other outdoor active’s such as circus skill like juggling, diabolo, hoola hoop, devil sticks again being shown too the elderly people by the young person or persons.

2. The way some individuals view cannabis users can be unnecessarily negative, bias and over dramatically skeptical like how every stoner is lazy, unmotivated or lack in communication completely, where I’ve always seen it as having a optimise affect on me and others. Cannabis creates more community in which new friends are found and brings new inventive styles of thinking for all topics, its basically a whole other family through my eyes and personal experiences. It’s hard to understand or even believe how much prejudice this drug/plant has faced in a short span of history from the government, medical corporations also a small minority of the public eye when it treats a large range of symptoms to disease’s and mental illness such as cancer, epilepsy, insomnia, schizophrenia, HIV/AIDS, arthritis, glaucoma and so many more this the main reason why I think it is an excellent subject to cover the wellbeing, empathy and altruism project and that the promotion of cannabis is very important. I’ve decided that I shall research other organisations photographers and artist’s who have promoted cannabis in positive outlooks too figure out my own creative process for this idea.

3. Near my house about a minutes time walking distances tavistock college has a red brick wall with two simple words “it is” spray painted on, I saw this a couple weeks back and thought of an idea to make a few cards with one word written on each such as what, f**k, a simple question mark and anything else I may think of which follows the saying written on the wall. I will make the cards 5 inches in width, 2-3 inches in length then i’ll find a suitable model to make them hold the card in front of there mouth before capturing the initial shots. My hope for the idea is that it symbolises that an individual hasn’t got as much say in how the rest of the world may or may not view, perceive, and judge them from there actions, reactions, well being and to be perfectly honest just by there existence.

4. Children with SEND which stands for Special Educational Needs and Disability have the symptom of autism at primary school in a special unit within the mainstream. Showing how the style of their learning, the fact that the establishment [school] recognise and promote a positive learning environment so children with diverse needs have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Looking at how with or without this children’s well-being is affected. Going deeper: the unit within the school is embedded in the school environment not only accepted/celebrated – children within the mainstream are also then given the opportunity to have an understanding, empathy and build on more diverse relationships/friendships with each other where they might not otherwise have times to mix [have mixed group sessions in the unit] [buddy times children in the unit with children from the mainstream]. Ill have access to the school’s unit because my mother works as a teacher there but I will have to ask or seek permission from the school which shouldn’t be hard and the children due them not wanting to be photographed and from there parents.

5. I know of a few single mums and feel that it would be a good fit in the projects criteria due some views on them can really unfair and stupidly judgmental because its hard for any women to rise a child in this world especially if they are under-financed, struggling to provide by themselves. I also feel that women have trapped freedom when they have kids, cant do as they wish because they have a child to look after on there own and in any free time they may have to get away from being a parent can be discriminated by others, forming an sexist negative stereotype for instance some people may say there a unfit mother or do not take control of their responsibility’s. I’m not saying that a mother that shouldn’t be one dose not exist but I do feel that people jump the gun on classing some that way.

6. I’d borrow the same equipment I used for the David baileys flash shoot to re do close up portraits in black & white then have 4 people I know and feel that resembles equality best in my life, they’ed let qualities and true colours show their fashion and general attitudes.

Getty Images

What is a picture library/agency?

An picture library is a collection or document where a person would store there images for sharing with people or just for safe keeping. The agency side must mean a website of an organisation which job it is to help individuals layout their photos into library’s for them.

Who are Getty images and what do they do?

Getty images are a visual media company and it supplies stock images, editorial photography, video and music for business and customers. Has archive over 200 million assets and they specialises in advertising, graphic design, print, online publishing, in-house design, marketing and communication departments.

Is there a trend in the style of work?

yes according to the there website they have a fast past of trends through the years.

How can “stock photography” really benefit photographers?

It helps by organising a suitable place for a collective of photographs and the person can add date, place, names of the people within the frame, put each photo in the order you’d wish and it can help with your profile appearance also getting your work seen online by more people.

Conclusion

I think Getty images is an amazing way to not just share your work but in hence it if you choose too, I look at as if it is a daily new site but instead of reporters creative artist, film makers and of course photographers not just showing important facts of the media and world but also generally just what they have interest in. I’d consider using this website or recommend it to a friend.

Screen Shot 2019-02-04 at 13.52.32.pngThe website covers things to a political level also as you can see here Bill Clinton doing his famous televised speech attempting to reassure the public about his sex scandal in the white house involving an intern Monica Lewinsky.

Screen Shot 2019-02-04 at 14.59.48.pngI am fond of the colour used and the meaning it brings to me, makes me think travelling.

We Are Strangers

Each 3 image’s of the project had to be distinctively different in a sense that number one would have to chores awareness or shock even an unsettling emotion towards the viewer, second photo had to be positive by celebrating everything that is remarkable about the environment or natural world. The third had less limitations just along as the person showed their own idea for the best use of plastics for me I took the inspiration of Gregg Segal’s project detritus. The topic of environmental damage we are covering for the project overall was plastic pollution but the teachers said if we had another idea surrounding a different environmental issue that would okay as well. First lecture we had on “we are strangers” told us many facts and statistics regrading plastic pollution also said that in the up coming weeks we’d have a lecture by Jackie Young from plastic free Plymouth who lets know we were doing a massive contribution to her eco friendly company by inventing our personal outlooks towards making awareness within are 3 final images. She had talked about the damages onto world from plastics in the sea for example, a crazy amount of marine life are dying everyday including turtles, fish we eat, and plankton which is a really big worry due to fact they produce oxygen into the atmosphere. Learning this has made me realise there is a lot of important problems which get ignored but shouldn’t so I see this project as a very beneficial way to get strong massages across to everyone who see’s the art and hopefully brings them positive change to our tackling struggle of a brighter healthier planet earth.

1 copy.jpg

The shock factor is pretty subtle which I like because I’ve captured a decent amount of background the shore, hills, and rocks from the main subject a left behind yogurt pot stuck inside a puddle separate from the sand on the beach which I believe found its way there due to the tide coming in sometime before. I had to decide between two images from the image one shoot, the first was the set image above the title and this one I also asked a student who sits near me for their opinion to make the decision easier. The black & white and use of negative space from the main subject is meant to represent similarities of Trevor Ashby work as he was my inspiration for this shoot. To do this shoot the equipment I used was a tripod and tried out a couple of filters that I have but didn’t use the filters for the actual two pictures you see here and as the set image.

Untitled-1 copy.jpg

Took this photo two days after Christmas at a beach half an hour away from Cornwall Callington it was a family outing I went with four generations of my family. The surrounding looked so unbelievably nice I had too take my camera out because the setting sun made a line of light that went down the wet sand and reflected off, I saw this as an opportunity and simply waited for surfers or family’s to walk through it so I’d catch their silhouette’s. This picture turned out to be the best from these attempts at capturing silhouettes and whilst editing I found it hard to determine between the constant of light and dark, didn’t want to make it so the viewer would miss things from way in the background but also wanted to keep the people walking by as clear silhouette. This image is obviously the warm friendly reassuring environmental piece due to the fact its of two happy surfers walking back home together as if they are good pals, nothing shocking or scary about the image more relaxing than anything less also I did not use another artist as inspiration for this, only photographs one and three have be inspired by two photographers. There was no equipment used for this image as I took it before I knew about the project ‘we are strangers’ in December. I planned to do a completely different idea for image 2, it was going to be set in Gunnislake, Cornwall a woodland area I like around ten minutes away from my home. I would of use my glass orb and placed it in a good spot where you’d see trees reflecting inside the orb but didn’t get round to doing it because I had done lots of preparation already for images one and three so I didn’t think too much on organising two then I remembered that a great photo I took weeks before could be great for an up lifting image. I’m most proud of the surfers picture because I was thinking on my feet when I decided to take it so there was no preparation for capturing an decisive moment, which more along the style I have interested.

3 copy.jpg

I shot this two Sundays ago in my living room using my two friends Owen, Finlay and my mum as models. Doing this in the style of Gregg Segal’s project detritus where he made a creature looking person entirely out of stuff we’d consider as waste such as beer cans, plastic bags, cigarette butts and many more thrown away things to reassemble a world drowning in excess. I wanted to create something close too his work but my difference is I added more than two models and a tin man made from multi coloured beer cans i’d collected over a couple mouths was held together by red gaffa tape in which it took me two or three days to finish making. My mum has bubble wrap over her head also is wearing plastic bags that were originally used for shipping clothes from different companies and my mate Finn has tobacco pouches taped around a hoodie and roach card put on a beanie also i’d collected both items that were put on him within the last few years, I did it by making him wear the hoodie and beanie first then began taping the objects on to him, he is also rolling a cigarette to have an irony effect added. The entire set up for this image took up too 2 hours before shooting at least on the day when I began the shoot, my friend Owen is wearing my suit I used for prom also he’s checking the time on his waist watch that’s because I wanted to bring a casual vibe to the scene like how Gregg creates within it his project’s and whats more casual then your own living room. Although I like this image I also think it’s got room for improvement in trying out other angles with the tripod and camera, and could of directed the body language of my models better to build more character to the theme in which I wanted to invent.

Conclusion

My preparation skills became the most easy on things I needed to use for all the images especially the third one because I’ve enjoyed being collective through out a lot of my life I didn’t have too go anyway to find more essential objects that i’d cover people in like plastics bags and such. It was interesting to learn so much on such a massive environmental struggle cause I had never looked into a particular topic such as this so much before but I did get pretty tired of hearing and writing all the terrifying facts about danger to marine life and possible future out comes due to plastic pollution also there is still lots more that could be added.

Bias Article

The Guardian – bias

  • quotes
  • The last five years sea heat has been the hottest and is continuing upwards due to greenhouse gases, this charts back to the late 1950’s.
  • so if you want to measure global warming you really have to measure the sea.
  • There are other ways of measuring climate change, but none are convincing as the ocean.
  • The current rate of ocean warming is equivalent to five hiroshima-size atomic bombs exploding every second.
  • Ocean warming is incontrovertible proof of global warming.
  • Scientists expect about one meter of sea level rise by the end  of the century, which would be enough to displace 150 million people worldwide.
  • It’s what makes us different to so many others in the media, at a time when factual, honest reporting is critical.

Daily Mail – non bias

  • quote
  • A landmark scientific paper –the one that caused a sensation by claiming there has been NO slowdown in global warming since 2000 – was critically flawed. And thanks to the bravery of a whistleblower, we now know that for a fact.

conclusion

Was given a task to make a decision between what article is bias or non bias out of The Guardian and Daily Mail I think the guardian is the bais one because there facts and opinion are really intense, over the top shocking words and statistics but I am very confused on which to choose from.

Gregg Segal

He approaches each project with a sensitive outlook of what a sociologist might have, explores many cultures presenting humanistic characteristics for incense individuals identity, memory, behaviour, roles, beliefs, values and I personally feel that he creates as best he can social humour using the surroundings and still objects he is granted with for at least majority of his workings. The goal Segal aims for is to engage viewers by utilising stark contrast and either makes things normally two in particular stand out immensely or places them closer together adding contrast effects this is know as juxtaposition also provoke reflections.

Detritus

The project represents a downing world of excess the trash monster known as detritus is a wad of walking rubbish and is explained on his website as being the embodiment of a fallen world. The figure is made from remains such as chewing gum, jelly, beans, doritoes, cheese doodles, beer cans plastic bags, cigarette butts, pizza crust all to reassembled from our own image gregg’s continues to say detritus is our consumer essence, which is inescapable like our own shadows.

Screen Shot 2019-01-29 at 11.06.21.pngI’ll start with explaining my favourite from Gregg Segal’s project detritus, this image seems that it is staged to look like a surprise capture in which I mean the body language facial expression of the two models are in a state of shock the rubbish man and obvious of the photo being taken the women to the left in the dressing gown. Throughout the series of thirteen photographs within this project the location always has a very average natural settings sometimes in simple homes or apartments and other times parks, alleyways even a sewer.

screen shot 2019-01-29 at 12.31.25A couple things stand out to me straight away at first glance mainly the expression of the worker’s face who is looking at detritus, its almost like the worker looks concerned, worried, and slightly scared as if he is thinking about what affect his carbon footprint has on the environment and thinking on what future lies ahead. Surrounding which is what I assume to be the mans workplace makes me question how much resource’s get use or wasted through out all work areas day by day.

Panorama

The class had a lecture this morning on panoramic photography where we all got told how to set up the equipment the best way, what setting, showed different photographers who had made their own versions, and other fun facts, tips, and means for going about doing this style of combining a collection of images together as one whole image. The sight of humans eyes perceive A.K.A binocular vision goes up to approximately 114 degrees where on the other hand panoramic can do up to 360 degrees.

panoramic photographs can be done in either short spaces or massive landscapes and is pretty easy for you to do it well just takes the right equipment, simple maths and patience. First you must set the tripod to the height to wish, place a camera on top then put it in a portrait not landscape check all three levels are straight. Have to use a standard lens for avoiding any distortion and start scanning the panoramic left to right overlap by 30% or 50%.

Untitled_Panorama1.jpg This is my panoramic it is somewhere around 180 degrees, I did it with the person I paired up with Jake we set up at the biggest roundabout near to the city centre. There are some distorted parts within the image one or two cars are cut half down, can see if you zoom in but it was my first time doing a panoramic and we had to get both done in time so I could get back to the palace court because I needed to crack on with the curriculum for not just this also two other artist evaluations I have to finish.

Trevor Ashby

Ashby discovered his lifetime passion of photography when he travelled to India forty years ago, originally he was training to be a painter but whilst he was there he realised he could frame images really well from what he was going to paint. After the trip he returned to England where he’d began to pick up different trades of photography. Massively influenced by changing situations and opportunities also by the availability of different equipment and materials. The most recent piece he has created was spending 14 months photographing at the eden project in Cornwall, he recored pattens and the structure of the plant formations. Many of his subject are fallen leaves and blossoms which he describe as lying unnoticed by visitors. The one project that I am using inspiration from his workings is called coastal where took photos of objects washed up on the shore’s of beaches in England for environmental awareness, stating the troubling facts of plastic pollution in all of the sea around our planet earth.

Coastal

The image below of simply a shoe on a beach has a lot of noticeable formal elements for incense firstly the camera is placed in a worm angle view where he also just fits the entity of the shoe. The a large array of negative space from the beach, sea and sky is interesting because of the passioning of the shoe making great use of depth of field and has lucky got here in time off the setting sun in the horizon which I like because the direction of light going down near the middle of the frame that mix’s with shadowing. Main reason to why I have chosen Trevor Ashby was that he was the only photographer covering the this topic and turning each image into black & white.

Screen Shot 2019-01-28 at 09.19.42.png

This is my favourite from Ashby’s project coastal for multiple reasons, the object being a TV is great because a large range of the public can relate by the idea that most people spend at least their evenings watching television. Use of negative space around the subject intrigues me due the fact its surrounded by the ocean and looks very close to the shore, I feel that Trevor took a photo just as the tide hits the beach to get a still and flat surface of the water with hardly any ripples.

Premiere Time Lapse Edit

This morning somebody named Simon who works at the tech equipment storage unit for the college showed the entire class step by step how to use adobe premiere and how to do main edits.

I enjoyed trying out premiere for the first time this morning and expect I’ll most defiantly use it again for video recordings and especially time lapse’s. What I did was place each individual time lapse in the order which I thought would be best then adding different texts too the time lapse’s also did two cuts right at the end of both the second and third time lapse to neaten up the whole video.

Time Lapse 2

Yesterday the whole class went to a beach in Plymouth we were told to do time lapsing but I didn’t get round to doing it so today I booked out a camera and went to the city centre with my glass orb to try one out there.

16/01/19

The time lapse turn out blurry because I made the mistake of putting the camera and lens in manual not keeping in mind to do or check the proper adjustments for depth of focus still looks interesting but definitely could of turned out better. So that I feel fully confident in creating time lapses I’ll continue to experiment either sometime next week whilst i’m in college or at home this week, I think it’ll help me a lot not just with the understanding of time lapsing but the camera’s manual settings.

21/01/19

I spent two hours and a half trying to find a decent angle for where I would place the glass orb starting the one and a half time lapse cycle as soon as I got home yesterday. It was fun and stressful due to it taking so long setting up two tripods up, one for the camera and the other holding the orb on top held together with blu tack also adjusting both to get a great enough angle so it would cover the whole sofa and the people on it. I’ll continue to look into what less I can do with the time lapse on the mac like turning the whole image upside down so the surrounding within the glass orb is the right way up and ask teachers for guidance, I shall show any further edits on this blog in the future.

Project 3 Proposal

I shall more than likely get the second image done first for the plastic pollution project due to the fact I find it’ll take the least amount of doing to complete and the location is close to my local area. I’ll be exploring a woodland area near Gunnislake with my glass orb, attempting to capture unreal reflections from trees, grass and other things which are a part of the woods and if possible explore it. I will find different things to place the orb on, grass, wood just so I am not holding it when comes to taking the shot also will use a tripod for this image and the other two. The first image is searching beaches for plastic pollution and anything out of the ordinary that relates to protracting the sea either in Plymouth or somewhere in Cornwall then edit the photograph in black & white to get a similar look as Trevor Ashby I’ll also keep in mind use of negative space of the objects which I come across which I’ve seen in Trevor’s work. Third image is inspired by a Gregg Sagle project detritus where he either has covered a person in rubbish or he made rubbish into the figure of a man giving face features like eyes and a mouth but left out the nose making the it look pretty odd. Gregg also places the rubbish man in strange social scenery bring humour into his images. What I’ve decided to do in contrasted to Sagle’s work is having multi models covered in plastic bags, tobacco pouches, roach card packets, and may more even from the use of tin cans i’ll make a tin can man. Then place a man amongst the rest of the rubbish people just wearing an normal looking suit.
