Daniel Benson

Lives in London as a Fashion photographer who does commercial work. Each month aiming to make 15 editorial pieces. Majority of them going to big magazines such as The Guardian, Attitude, The Observer, i-D, Stella (Telegraph), Glass Magazine, Clash Magazine and Verities.

He also does commercial work for companies like Apple, Adidas, Fred Perry, Primark, White Stuff, CAT Footwear, Hunter Boots, Sperry Footwear, Gloverall, Sony Music, Atlantic Records, XL Records. Which all happens to due to his connection with stem agency.

This was a suggested artist study to alongside are FMP research but I found from what I’ve heard from today’s lecturer that he has great value knowledge to support my overall concept.

He studied abroad photography degree course at UWE which is where I’ll be next year in the media productions course. He then moved to London.

Todays’ lecturer Steve knows him personally as Benson work with him on his BMX Magazine, simultaneously Benson was working part-time for 10 years as an assistant for a fashion photographer. After awhile the magazine was completed in 2015 this was when Benson embraced becoming his own full Fashion photographer as he would have gained enough knowledge and confidence.

Apparently, he involves himself with each shoot no matter the topic. Too truly invest the time and attention toward the subject your photographing, inverse yourself fully for capturing that special moment or emotion.

This is how I am conducting the shoots for my FMP. Breathing in and out the intriguing points from stories/activities of individual people and creative groups for the amount of time I am given to later be captured. All my models and there chosen topics play a part in the community or others simply apart of society.

From looking through his pictures I can tell he’s very observant of people and what they are doing. If it’s when he’s travelling country to country like to japan snapshotting locals or if it’s one on one with a subject he’s got a great understanding on when the perfect moment to capture is. To achieve this you have to have a lot of past experience and you’ve got to be very alert of what the model does facially and vigilant of what you’re saying to the model.

The composition of models is fully unique for each of the Commercial/Fashion shoots, for his personal projects (Estuary English, Sumo and Atlanta) where its either still life, landscapes or street photographs you can tell he takes more time with these. He waits for moments created by people in the street or with what he see’s up close or vast views to appear in front of him so he can snap quickly yet effectively.

Personal Projects

Over the years Daniel has taken time out of working for big-time magazines to undergo personal projects revealing the culture or points of culture in his own and other countries. I find this very relatable to my concept, I have developed a few of my own ideas also my tactics/methods are better off now due to the inspiration viewed in his projects. The countries Benson did his conceptions were (England, Atlanta, Japan).
